general INFORMATION
The European Security and Defence College (ESDC) is an EU body embedded in the External Action Service (EEAS) of the European Union (EU) that provides training and education at EU level in the field of the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP), which is part of the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP).
The ESDC was created as a networking college and therefore relies on authorized national entities. The ESDC is currently composed of more than 160 national training and education institutions with different areas of expertise and basics.
Military Technical Academy “Ferdinand I” has become part of the prestigious network of the European Security and Defence College in July 2020.
The European Security and Defence College (ESDC) is organised in a four structures:
1. The Steering Committee responsible for the coordination and direction of the ESDC training activities;
2. The Executive Academic Board (EAB) ensures the quality and coherence of the ESDC training activities and is supported by the following domain specific configurations:
(a) Military Erasmus Initiative;
(b) Doctoral School on CSDP;
(c) Sectoral Qualification Framework for the Military Officer Profession (SQF MILOF);
(d) Cyber;
(e) Security Sector Reform (SSR);
(f) Working Group on CSDP Missions and Operations related Training (WG MOT).
3. The Head of the ESDC is responsible for the financial and administrative management of the ESDC, as well as assisting the Committee and the Board in organising and managing ESDC activities;
4. The ESDC Secretariat assists the Head of the ESDC in fulfilling his tasks.
“European Initiative for the exchange of young officers inspired by Erasmus – military erasmus”
In November 2008 the European Union Ministers of Defence decided in their Council of the European Union Conclusions on the ESDP (2903rd External Relations Council Meeting) to establish an Implementation Group (IG) for the so-called “European Initiative for the exchange of young officers inspired by Erasmus”, or with other names “Military Erasmus” or “EMILYO” (Exchange of MILitary Young Officers).
The overall goal of this MILITARY ERASMUS INITIATIVE is to harmonize the European Union Basic Officer Education and to increase interoperability, thus to increase Europe’s security. With all its activities the IG shall promote a European Security and Defence Culture, in terms of spreading the idea among the Officer Cadets and Students participating in the Basic Officer Education, that current and future challenges can be better managed together.
An Implementation Group was created in February 2009 in the frame of the European Security and Defence College’s Executive Academic Board.
Military Technical Academy “Ferdinand I” has supported since the beginning the idea of the Military Erasmus initiative and since 2018 has actively participated in all the meetings of Military Erasmus initiative Implementation Group.

EUROPEAN DOCTORAL SCHOOL ON CSDP MEMBERSHIP
The European Doctoral School on the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) is an initiative launched in 2017 by volunteer institutions and the European Security and Defence College to develop a range of training and provide support for doctoral research on the CSDP in the EU.
Its objective is to develop a critical mass of scientific and academic expertise that brings together supervisors and mentors and promotes the exchange of knowledge, skills and competences on European security and defence with a view to providing support for PhD level research reflecting on the CSDP.
It offers a specialized training program supplementary to the courses organized by its network institutions in their doctoral curricula and supports multi-disciplinary doctoral researches with relevant European training and environments in the following areas:
1. Cyber, new technologies and security in the CSDP context;
2. Critical infrastructure, personnel and logistics in CSDP;
3. Defense industry and capabilities for the CSDP;
4. Partner capacity-building and external relations in the CSDP context;
5. History, conflict studies, concepts, values and ethics of the CSDP;
6. Defence economics, financing, education, training and leadership in the CSDP context;
7. Governance, management, decision-making and deployment for CSDP.
Military Technical Academy “Ferdinand I” has become part of the European Doctoral School on the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) in 2019.
MTA representatives actively take part in the European Doctoral School on CSDP meetings, staff of the MTA Doctoral School “Engineering of Defence and Security Systems” are part of the supervisors and mentors network of the European Doctoral School on CSDP and MTA PhD students have the opportunity to take part in internships in one of the member institutions of the European Doctoral School on CSDP network.
